Barnes & Derivatives: Peering Through The BKS Talk

Following the announcement last night that Barnes & Noble ( BKS ) received a $1 billion acquisition proposal by Liberty Capital ( LCAPA ), analysts today were collecting there thoughts on what impact it might have on Liberty, B&N, and others. Credit Suisse’s Gary Balter reiterated a Neutral rating on B&N, writing that the Liberty offer is “a brilliant and well timed move” by Liberty. Barnes & Noble, if combined with Borders Group ( BGP ), which is in bankruptcy, could yield $400 million to $500 million in annual Ebitda.

JDSU, FNSR: Stifel Cuts Estimates; Still Buys

Stifel Nicolaus analyst Ajit Pai today writes that the disaster in Japan has exacerbated a slowdown in fiber optics , with the result that “the inventory correction and slowdown for the optical communications industry is likely to last at least until the end of the summer.” Shares of optical companies are broadly lower today, with Finisar ( FNSR ) trading down by 72 cents, or 3%, to $21.12 ; JDS Uniphase ( JDSU ) is down $1.14, or almost 6%, at $19.02; and Opnext ( OPXT ) is off 11 cents, or almost 5%, at $2.30.

FitnessKeeper scoops up $1.1M to build out fitness app

Startup FitnessKeeper , the parent company of the RunKeeper smartphone app, has raised $1.11 million and will use the money to build out its nine-person operation and dive into the highly competitive world of now-fashionable mobile fitness applications. The RunKeeper iPhone app uses GPS locating to track your distance, time, elevation, pace and path on a map and has caught the eye of several major investors since the company was founded two years ago, primarily because it has kept up with rapidly developing technologies

“It was almost out of fear of being left behind” said director Richard Kelly of his reasons for joining Twitter at last night's Power of the Tweet Poolside Chat for the L.A. Film Festival .  The chat was intended to bring together some of Hollywood's most Twitter-happy personalities , with a panel that also included filmmakers Jon Chu , Eli Roth and Adam Shankman , whom you may know best as the recipient of that infamous Miley Cyrus lap dance . For those who think Twitter has peaked and is on the decline, think again.

Evri acquires Twine for a semantic search team-up

Evri , a company using semantic technology to deliver real-time search results around news, just announced that it has acquired another semantic-focused startup, Radar Networks , and its flagship product Twine. Evri chief executive Will Hunsinger said Twine’s technology, including the in-development revamp dubbed “T2,” will be incorporated into Evri.
