Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

In a press event at CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas, Samsung unveiled the details on the new Galaxy S smart phone, and a related set of services called Smart Life.

Samsung mobile exec J.K. Shin officially unveiled the phone earlier; he made a brief appearance here, but the company brought out another guy – an SVP named Omar Khan – to walk through the details on the phone.

  • Supports e-mail services, including web mail and Active Sync, social networking messages, aggregates email, calendar, IM, contacts into single screen. Kevin Thau, VP of mobile  business at Twitter is introduced; he says mobile is in Twitter’s DNA. He’s talking about how great it will be to tweet on the company’s big 4-inch super AMOLED screen. But he doesn’t make any actual news. He notes that the phone pulls all of the social networking info into an application called Social Hub.
  • Khan is back. He notes that the device uses the DLNA standard to share information with other consumer electronics devices.
  • He’s talking with great passion about the super AMOLED display. The benefits are “truly endless!”
  • He also says it is the most response touch-screen experience available.
  • The phone is just 9.9 mm thin.
  • To repeat what Shin said earlier, he points out: the phone is 20% brighter, 80% less reflective, and has 20% higher battery life.
  • The phone will have Skiff reader software for magazine, newspaper and book content. The Skiff is an e-reader that is supposed to be introduced later this year.
  • The phone has a new Layar Reality Browser.
  • 1 GHz browser is at least 3x the power of other smart phones, Khan says.
  • A guy from Paramount Pictures is here to talk about the power of distributing movies on mobile devices. No specific announcements, but boy, movies on phones! Woo-hoo!
